The PDX Peace Coalition will march along side Aguayo in the streets of Portland on Monday, July 9, 2007. The event will begin at 4pm at Holladay Park (NE 11th Ave. and Holladay St.) and we hope you will join us in this peaceful demonstration to resist war!
We hope you will also join us at 7pm on Wednesday, July 11th, for an extended forum with Agustín Aguayo and other Iraq Veterans Against the War at the Multicultural Center (Room 228) located in the Smith Memorial Student Center on the Portland State University campus. On July 11, you will have a chance to hear first hand Aguayo's story: his experiences in Iraq, in prison, and his participation in the GI resistance movement.
On Tuesday, July 10, Augustin will visit the Woodburn/Salem area to participate in events organized by the Latino immigrant community, hosted by PCUN and CAUSA. This is an important opportunity to make connections between the War in Iraq, the militarization of the US-Mexico border, the increasing recruitment of Latino immigrants, and the rise in anti-immigrant violence.
Bio: Agustin Aguayo went AWOL (absent without leave) last summer after being ordered to return to Iraq for a second deployment. He had previously spent a year there, where he refused to load his gun no matter how dangerous the situation. He had applied for Conscientious Objector status but was denied. He was subsequently sentenced by the military to 8 months in military prison, and was finally released in April 2007.
