Students Not Soldiers! Volunteer for Opt Out 2007
Fall is an exciting time for counter-recruitment: students are back in school, and the military is getting busy enlisting young people for an increasingly disastrous war.
Since No Child Left Behind, Bush's education legislation passed May 2001, all military recruiters have access to all students' private information. During the month of September, students have the right to sign the opt out form, informing their school to delete their names and contact information from the Pentagon's Database.
Every September counter-recruitment groups around the country engage in "opt out" campaigns where they educate students and parents about their right to opt out and encourage folks to opt out . It is a small step, but an easy way to get the conversation started. Once a student signs an opt-out form, they are more likely to think critically about the military and think about alternatives.
This year, we need tons of volunteers for an expanded Opt Out campaign, running from September 10th through the 28th. The PDX Peace Coalition is working in collaboration with Beats for Peace to plan a campaign that will hit 14 schools and includes an Opt Out party with hip hop music, free food and youth speakers.
Can you help out for a few hours before school, at lunchtime or after school during the month of September? Then email resist@pdxpeace.org to volunteer!
Come to our Opt Out Training on Saturday, September 1st from 11am-1pm at the AFSC Office (2249 E. Burnside) to learn more about the campaign and your role as a volunteer.
To end this illegal, immoral and unjust war, we need to put an end to military recruitment in our schools and neighborhoods.
Please join us!
